چکیده

THE problem of perspiration and its removal from the amputee's arm and leg stumps encased in sockets has engaged the attention of the doctor and limb fitter for as long as limbs have been fitted. In the early days of leather prostheses, a few months of wear during the summer were sufficient to cause the leather to rot and degrade because of perspiration. Since it was not possible to wash leather prostheses easily, severe hygienic problems were created. Efforts to coat leather with plastic films to overcome this difficulty were only partially successful for, in many instances, the adhesion of the coating was poor and frequent re-coatings were necessary. With the development of the all-plastic arm, it became possible to wash the socket thoroughly and virtually eliminate the hygienic problem. However, because the plastic did not permit diffusion of water vapor, sweat gathered profusely in the socket and became a source of discomfort and irritation. Efforts to permit diffusion of sweat by drilling gross holes in the plastic socket were not very successful. Although this practice permitted greater removal of sweat than in undrilled prostheses, the strength characteristics were seriously affected when a sufficient number of holes were cut to permit adequate removal. In addition, there still remained between the holes impervious plastic which could block large numbers of sweat pores—approximately 155 per square centimeter on the forearm (1)—and

The Navy Prosthetics Research Laboratory impulsion valve.

PERSPIRATION of the stump while a prosthesis is being worn has always been a problem to a sizable segment of the amputee population. As a rule, amputees perspire at a greater rate than is normal even without the prosthesis. The newer, total-contact sockets as designed and introduced offer no provision for ventilation. Although in the case of some patients who sweat profusely during the initial ...

Abstract: Do Plastic Surgery Residents Receive Similar Hand Surgery Training?

Methods:A candidate was chosen based on strict screening criteria including ongoing immunosuppression, proof of compliance and strong family support. The recipient was an eightyear-old quadrimembral amputee secondary to sepsis with distal forearm amputations who was functional with lower extremity prostheses but had failed upper extremity prostheses. A donor was found with ABO compatibility and...

A Rare Case of Horse Shoe Shaped Lipoma of the Upper Extremity

Horse shoe shaped lipoma of the upper extremity is a very rare entity. We present a case of 45 years old female who presented with painless progressive swelling over the distal forearm and tingling and numbness over the ulnar nerve territory. MRI and surgical exploration showed a horse shoe shaped multilobulated lipoma encasing the distal ulna. The mass was excised in toto, and the sensory alte...

Functional Latissimus Dorsi Transfer for Upper-Extremity Reconstruction: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

Objective: The latissimus dorsi flap is a workhorse for plastic surgeons, being used for many years for soft-tissue coverage of the upper extremity as well as for functional reconstruction to restore motion to the elbow and shoulder. The authors present a case of functional latissimus dorsi transfer for restoration of elbow flexion and review the literature on technique and outcomes. Methods: A...
